The beginning of a great series.
Great first book in the series. At first, I was worried there would just be a lot of gory encounters - but as the book goes on, there is more humor, character insight, and strategy (after all, this IS a "How to" book).I think Mick and his family and neighbors have a lot more in store for us - at least I hope so!Great for kids who are into gross stuff, and the adults will like this too!

The joy of being a young boy!
I became the favorite uncle when I turned my two young nephews onto Mick Bogerman. I read them myself first and was totally captivated. I keeping thinking about the games and make-believe worlds that went through my head when I was their age (and Mick's). Kudos for capturing the joy and creativity of that time in every boys' life.

Fun and creepy!
How to Navigate Zombie Cave and Defeat Pirate Pete is about exactly what the title suggests... Mick sets out to this Zombie Cave in the search of Pirate Pete's treasure and defeat him while he's at it. Why is he doing this, you ask? It's really sweet actually. You see, Mick wants to find the treasure because he wants to help his mom financially! Awwws! Such a sweet kid :)When I first heard about this book I knew I had to read! It just sounded like a lot of fun! And it totally was! Such an adventure! There was non-stop action and it was very humorous! There was also lots of awesome gore, but nothing too gory... it is a children's novel, after all ;)While on his adventure, Mick leaves behind his little brother Finley who wants to come along really badly! But hello! Pirate zombies? I don't think so, little brother. And can I just say how much I loved Mick and Finley's brotherly relationship! Finley annoys the heck out of Mick like any other younger sibling, but in the end he really loves him and will protect him no matter what. It was very endearing :) Kinda reminds me of two other brothers I've recently become obsessed with... *cough* Sam and Dean Winchester *cough*One thing, though, we don't get to know Mick all that well and we don't get too much of a back story or a ton of dialogue. There is some, but not too much. But overall, it was an awesome book! It was a very easy, fast read with amazingly vivid and creepy descriptions. Great for the kiddos who love fun adventurous books with a little bit of a creepy twist! This is a series I'll definitely be passing on to my 10-year-old brothers!

This one oozes with not just zombie goo, but also awesomeness!
Writing under the nom de plume of Mick Bogerman, the author tells these stories from the first person perspective - and it works beautifully.Mick is a smart kid, and has enough curiosity and ingenuity to take us with him on several adventures. We see this from the very beginning, as he tells us about his very well thought out decision to tie his brother to a stake, as well as his ability to get a friend to allow him to borrow a treasure map from the museum that employs the boy's father. The map written in the 1700s that basically disintegrated because he forgot to keep it watertight.Oops.Throughout this ebook, there's a wonderful blend of humor, horror, and quick thinking in the face of danger. From chapter one I knew this was a good one.Mick felt real.He made decisions that were smart, but also decisions that were irrational, due to high stress. I mean... zombies! I don't know about you, but I'd probably make some really weird choices, too, if I was trying to keep from being mauled by the undead. And the structure of this story?Definitely not the norm. You won't find "chapters" in this book. Instead, sections are called steps. The first chapter, for example, is:Step 1Find Zombie CaveIf you ever need to survive a zombie infested treasure hunt, this would be a good ebook to have with you. And bonus! As an ebook, it has a backlight. Very useful in dark terrain. What?! I'm just saying... it may be a good supply to have with you.(This is a truncation of my full review, posted to Undiscovered Tomes. It should also be noted that this is an *honest* review of a free review copy.)

Pretty decent and quick
12-year-old Mick is a young North Carolina lad looking for pirate gold in the short story “Slug Pie Story #1: How to Navigate Zombie Cave and Defeat Pirate Pete” by Mick Bogerman. The story starts off with big brother Mick tying up his little brother, 10-year-old Finley, to a stake on a beach after their delicious pancake breakfast as he prepares to venture into Zombie Cave to find Pirate Pete’s treasure chest filled with gold.Armed with his trusty miner’s helmet, pitchfork, treasure map, incapacitated beach combing brother, and determination, Mick is off for adventure!According to the title, you will know why it is called Zombie Cave (NOT spoiling that nugget!)Events occur, and a few kid revelations are discovered to where we can all learn from through Mick’s young eyes. The story is solid and there, just needs a bit more proofing. Improper words were used at times, and some sentences felt awkward structurally in some places. The visuals are good, namely in the zombie descriptions. Other than that, I enjoyed the adventure!“Slug Pie Story #1: How to Navigate Zombie Cave and Defeat Pirate Pete” is a pretty decent and quick story for (some) youngsters to read. It does get a bit gruesome, and I am thankful for Mick’s disclaimer at the beginning of this book. If you have a strong-gutted child or children, read this pirate adventure with them.
